What's an extended SDS?
Definition
The extended Safety Data Sheet longer and more detailed than the Safety Data Sheet :
- It has more subsections than the classical SDS
- It contains enclosed in annex the exposure scenarios
Ideally, it should cover all your uses in the life cycle of a substances, from production to waste through:
- Its uses within your organisation
- Its uses by your customers
- It uses by organisations whose clients are themselves providers
When should I edit an extended SDS?
- The substance has been registered
- The tonnage band is higher than 10T/year
- The product is classified as dangerous according to Directive 67/548/CEE or assessed as PBT or vPvB
Extended SDS: what for?
The extended SDS summarises the key information of CSR (Chemical Safety Report) that another organisation conducted upstream of your supply chain as part of REACH registration.
In an exposure scenario, you can find what are the uses covered by the registration dossier of the substance. If your uses and those of your clients are covered, you'll find important information or conditions of uses of the substance safely.
Each time a Safety Data sheet is required, you must provide to your customers informations on hazards, conditions of use and appropriate risk management advice.
What should my provider include in extended SDSs?
- The main technical functions of the substance (E.g : flame retardant, pigment, stabilizer, etc.) and uses covered by exposure scenarios.
- The exposure limit values for health and environment that shouldn't be exceeded (Which are identified in CSR report made by your provider).
- Physico-chemical data required to asses the level of exposure(E.g: solubility, saturated vapor pressure, biodegradability, etc.).
- one or more exposure scenarios with practical tips on security conditions of use: risk management measures, waste management measures.
