REACH applies to companies producing or importing chemical substances in quantities of one ton or more in the European Union, imposing obligations on manufacturers, importers, and downstream users.
Companies subject to REACH must register and assess the chemical substances they produce or import in quantities of one ton or more per year. They are also required to seek authorization for the use of certain substances of particular concern and comply with imposed restrictions. Additionally, they must share information on substance safety with the supply chain and contribute to substituting the most dangerous substances with safer alternatives whenever possible.
To determine if a product is affected by REACH, check the compliance statement provided by the manufacturer or distributor, specifying the presence of substances subject to REACH. Product safety data sheets may also provide information on chemical substances. Furthermore, the ECHA public database allows searching for specific details on chemical substances and their uses in accordance with REACH regulations.
REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals, is the European Union Regulation 197/2006 aimed at ensuring the safety and risk management associated with chemicals. It requires companies to register and evaluate the chemical substances they produce or import, while limiting the use of certain hazardous substances.
