Created in January 2013, this group aims at defining a sustainable development program for post-2015. This time, chemical and waste management was the main discussion subject.
The definitive list of sustainable development goals decided by the group will be published at the end of the year. The UN Environment Program (UNEP) hosted a side event with Switzerland and Sweden which defined the main aspects of these goals. These emphasize the importance of cross-cutting indicators and clear goals for chemical and waste management in a context where environmental and social issues are becoming more pressing.
Some examples:
- Reducing the vulnerability of poor communities to chemical exposure by 2030
- Reducing and even eliminating the release and exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace by 2030
- Incorporating chemical waste management in the national strategies of sustainable development
- Reducing the number of deaths and illnesses related to chemical exposure and poor waste management in the workplace
- Etc.
During the event, representatives from the chemical industry, manufacturers or downstream users, asked to extend the mandate beyond 2020 of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). As for the authority representatives, they focused on the issues that chemical and waste management would bring to sustainable development policies.
Pascal Canfin, Deputy Minister for Development also underlined France�s commitment, as it will be welcoming the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year.
