What is a biocidal product?

Product types according to the BPR

In Annex 5 to the Biocidal products regulation (BPR) are classified into 22 biocidal product-types (PT). They are grouped in four main categories:

  • Disinfectants
  • Preservatives
  • Pest control
  • Other biocidal products

Disinfectants

This first group gathers PT 1 to 5. However, a distinction must be made with borderline products, here cleaning products are not intended to be biocidal product (Eg: washing up liquid)

  • PT 1 gathers all human hygiene products which are not cosmetics by their purpose of disinfection.
  • PT 2 gathers all disinfectants and algaecides products not intended for direct application to humans or animals
  • PT3 gathers all veterinary hygiene products
  • PT4 gathers food and feed area
  • PT 5 refers to drinking water

Preservatives

This second group gathers PT 6 to 13. This group covers only products to prevent microbial growth and development of aglae.

  • PT 6 refers to preservatives for products during storage
  • PT 7 refers to film preservatives
  • PT 8 refers to wood preservatives
  • PT 9 refers to fibre, leather, rubber, and polymerised materials preservatives
  • PT 10 refers to construction material preservatives
  • PT 11 preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems
  • PT 12 refers to slimicides
  • PT 13 refers to working or cutting fluid preservatives

Pest control :

This third group includes the fight against harmful products. These are PT 14 to 20

  • PT 14 refers to rodenticidesli>
  • PT 15 refers to avicides
  • PT 16 refers to molluscicides, vermicides and products to control other invertebrates
  • PT 17 refers to piscicides
  • PT 18 gathers insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods
  • PT 19 refers to repellents and attractants
  • PT 20 refers to control of other vertebrates

Other biocidal products :

This fourth and last group gathers all other biocidal products. It is composed of the last two PT 21 and 22..

  • PT 21 refers to antifouling
  • PT 22 refers to embalming and taxidermist fluid
