REACH Registration simplified

Three key principles for understanding REACH registration

The REACH regulation requires the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of CHemical substances manufactured, used or imported on the European market.
REACH is behind the creation of ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency, the European body dedicated to implementing this regulation.

« No data, no market »

Substances, whether used alone, in mixtures or in articles, may not be produced or marketed within the Community without prior registration in accordance with the applicable requirements.

Precautionary principle: the company is responsible

Industry is responsible for assessing and managing the risks posed by chemicals, and for providing safety information to their users.

Traceability & Communication

Every player in the supply chain must communicate, exchange and transmit all the necessary information, both upstream and downstream.

Key products for REACH registration

REACH covers more than 30,000 substances, whether used on their own, in preparations or in articles. As a result, all industries are affected: chemical, electrical, automotive, textile, etc.

The main players affected by REACH

Manufacturers and importers of substances are affected by REACH, and are responsible for preparing the registration dossier to be submitted to ECHA (laboratory tests, information gathering from downstream users, etc.). Distributors and downstream users must also ensure REACH compliance. The entire supply chain is therefore involved, with the exception of waste collectors and consumers.

REACH Registration dossier

Each registrant must prepare a technical registration dossier bringing together data on the substance and its uses: physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties. ‍

For chemical substances above 10 tons per year, the REACH regulation requires a Chemical Safety Report including exposure scenarios and an assessment of potential risks. ‍
