Anatase titanium dioxide: soon to be banned?

3/12/2014

Research has shown that this potentially hazardous substance reacts with sunlight and water, intensifying the formation of free radicals and therefore speeding up sun damage, especially when used at the nano scale.

A study was carried out in 2008, following reports that roof coatings were breaking down after workers had brushed against those areas while wearing sunscreen. The results showed that this substance accelerated the rate of sun damage to the roofs by 100 times.

Anatase titanium dioxide was found in major brands of sunscreen and FOE is now requesting that nanomaterials in cosmetics be safety tested and labelled.

This will be the case from July 2013 in Europe but not in the US or Australia. As for New Zealand, the labelling requirement will start from 2015.
