ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) identified five substances as priorities in its study from last month, two of which were endocrine disruptors .
The report is part of a larger investigation, requested by the French General Health Administration (Direction Gnrale de la Sant (DGS)) in 2009, which targets more than thirty substances considered as toxic to reproduction and/or endocrine disruptors, as well as the risks they entail.
Among these five substances (o-phenylphenol, hexane, toluene, methyl tert-butyl ether and cis-CTAC), two are considered as endocrine disruptors (EDs). The first one o-phenylphenol could impact the general public as well as professionals; both being exposed when using them as solvents, deordorisers and cleaning products. Exposure through feedstuff is also mentioned.
ANSES wishes to encourage the substitution of this substance by carrying out additional toxicity studies on OPP and its endocrine disrupting character as well as on potential substitutes.
Toxicological information on this ED used as an additives in car fuel is limited. However, the agency has identified many exposure scenarios suggesting it is toxic to reproduction. The Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) should therefore be reduced in the years to come. This ANSES report shows Frances will to push to debate forward. According to the European Commission, the definition of endocrine disruptors, like that of nanomaterial, is still not definite but it shouldnt be long. If you are a professional that uses these substances, we would advise you get ready to ensure the continuity of your business.
