ECHA launches a major revamp of its website's substance information

22/1/2016

The ECHA recently announced its will to revamp its substance information website in order to clarify existing information and to provide recurring users (governments representatives, journalists, company experts, etc.) with information of better clarity and availability. The Agency thus takes part to the improvement of the accessibility of knowledge on chemical substances.

General public will be granted information on chemical substances according to three dimensions that depend on the knowledge of the searcher and of the object of the search:

  • Fact sheets: there is one fact sheet for each of the 120,000 substances that have been notified to the European institutions. Those fact sheets gather information such as the substance's classification, its label and pictogram, its critical properties (such as CMR Carcinogenic, Mutagenic and Reprotoxic), its likely uses, its REACH Registration elements, and an access to information that concerns the safety precautions for a risk free usage of the substance.
  • Short profiles: those profiles are only for substances that have been registered under REACH, which represent roughly 14,000 substances. Compared to the fact sheets, those profiles give more details. The provide information on the impacts of the substance on environment and human health. Access to those profiles is given by a link that belongs to the substance fact sheet.
  • The complete list of data sources: this section details all the raw data that have been transmitted to the ECHA by the companies.

Improvement expected by the ECHA

The ECHA scheduled to create an advanced search functionality in order to enable the user to perform transversal searches from several different sources.

Besides, by 2017, the ECHA wishes to make information on biocide active substances available for users as it is already the case for REACH dossiers. The useful data will be then integrated to substances fact sheets and short profiles.

Lastly, the ECHA worked with the ICCA (Internation Council of Chemial Associations) and the CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council) on the possibility to generate substances short profiles outside IUCLID dossiers as a new IUCLID functionality. The ECHA wishes thus to facilitate GPS dossier generation for the companies that have already registered chemical substances, using data from their own registration dossier.

Those updates may be really useful for all the companies that are concerned by the REACH 2018 deadline and that will have to register their substances with reduced time limits.
