Echas report shows that using alternatives to measure chemical toxicity instead of testing on animals is growing.
The 38,000 dossiers that served as a basis for the study come from the 2010 and 2013 registrations. It shows that the mandatory data sharing has been respected for the most part and that read-across approaches as well as in vitro studies have been much more implemented, which has resulted in a decrease of animal testing. This complies with REACHs ambition to have a balance between the need of information to increase our understanding of the hazards of chemical substances, and the aim of avoiding un-necessary testing on animals in generating such information. This trend can be particularly noticed in Vietnam, where the Cruelty Free International organisation has joined forces with the countrys Health Ministry to train personnel to in vitro testing methods. This action follows the governments decision to phase out animal tests (learn more).
